The University of Nebraska – Lincoln, often referred to as Nebraska, UNL of simply NU, is a flagship institution of the University of Nebraska System, situated near downtown Lincoln, which is the capital and the 2nd most populated city in the US state of Nebraska, as well as the county seat of Lancaster County. The city first started as the village of Lancaster, which was founded in 1856, and it quickly grew, having nowadays a population estimated at a number of over 250 000 inhabitants (2008).
UNL was created 2 years after Nebraska reached statehood, by an act of the Nebraska Legislature, in 1869. It was the 1st institution in the American West to establish an undergraduate psychology lab, as well as the first one to grant a PhD degree. Since it was founded, NU grew, offering today its students over 270 programs of study, as well as more than 140 undergraduate majors, through 9 different colleges which include the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, College of Business Administration and the College of Engineering.
The athletic teams from UNL are known as the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who compete in the NCAA Division I, and I-A for football, as members of the Big 12 Conference. UNL has 21 varsity athletic teams that compete in 14 different sports, the Cornhuskers being best known for their achievements in football, volleyball and gymnastics.
The list of notable UNL alumni contains names such as George Wells Beadle - Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Donald Cram - Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1987), Karen Blessen - first graphic artist to win a Pulitzer Prize (in explanatory journalism), Edith Abbott (1901) - first woman dean of a graduate school in an American university and the dean of the first school of social work in the nation, Johnny Carson (1949) - host of the ‘’Tonight Show’’ for more than 30 years (1958, 1962-1992), as well as many other famous personalities who have made themselves notable in various fields.
